In a significant move, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced Turkey’s formal entry into South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice. This announcement was made at a press conference in Ankara, where Fidan was accompanied by Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.

Turkey supports South Africa’s claim that Israel breached the Genocide Convention in Gaza. The allegations focus on Israel’s attacks on hospitals and blockades that limit humanitarian aid, which Israel strongly denies.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned Israel’s actions as “war crimes” and “genocide.” He supports Hamas, viewing it as a liberation group, contrary to its designation as a terrorist organization by Israel, the US, and the EU.

Turkey’s involvement in this lawsuit highlights its commitment to influencing global justice. This step represents a critical juncture in international relations, especially in the context of Middle Eastern politics.
