South Africa Reaffirms Strong Support for Palestine at May Day Rally

At a May Day rally at Athlone Stadium, President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated South Africa’s unwavering support for Palestine, urging workers to advocate for global human rights. The rally, hosted by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), drew significant attendance from union members and supporters.

President Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of solidarity in the struggle against oppression, highlighting the severe conditions faced by Palestinians. “Our support for the people of Palestine is firm,” Ramaphosa declared, calling for Palestinian freedom and liberation as a measure of South Africa’s own commitment to human rights.

Cosatu, which stands as the largest trade union federation in South Africa, along with the South African Communist Party, forms a strategic alliance with Ramaphosa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC). Zingiswa Losi, president of Cosatu, echoed Ramaphosa’s sentiments, rallying the crowd with a powerful reminder that South Africa’s freedom is intertwined with the freedom of the Palestinian people.

This stance aligns with a long-held view among many South Africans who see parallels between Israel’s policies in Gaza and the West Bank and apartheid-era practices in South Africa. The issue is particularly poignant as South Africa approaches its general elections on May 29, where these international alliances and domestic policies will be at the forefront of voters’ minds.
