Enugu State House of Assembly has taken decisive action following the recent abuse of a female nurse, Ms Blessing Ogbonna, by a group of masquerades in Ihe-Owerre, Nsukka Local Government Area. In response to this incident and other related concerns, the assembly has formed an ad-hoc committee tasked with devising practical measures to regulate masquerade activities in the state.
The decision to establish the committee was made during a session on Thursday in Enugu, following a motion put forward by Mr Malachy Onyechi. Onyechi, representing Nsukka West Constituency, highlighted the alarming trend of human rights abuses, threats to life, and property destruction associated with masquerade activities in the area.
Citing the recent assault on Ms Blessing Ogbonna, Onyechi stressed the need for urgent action to address the recurring incidents of violence perpetrated by masquerades and their followers. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the rights and safety of individuals while respecting cultural practices.
The motion aims to establish clear guidelines and rules of engagement for masquerade performances, whether for cultural exhibitions, entertainment, or commercial purposes. Onyechi clarified that the intention behind the motion is not to target any specific group but to promote harmony and ensure accountability in masquerade practices.
Additionally, the assembly condemned the practice of blocking roads, which impedes essential services such as healthcare delivery. Mr Pius Ezugwu, representing Nsukka East Constituency, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the potential for conflicts arising from masquerade activities in his constituency.
The establishment of the ad-hoc committee reflects the assembly’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by masquerade activities while preserving cultural heritage and promoting public safety.
