In a stunning turn of events, Real Madrid clinched their 36th La Liga title on Saturday after Girona fought back to secure a remarkable 4-2 victory over Barcelona. Carlo Ancelotti’s side, with an unassailable lead in the standings, sealed the title with four matches remaining.

Real Madrid’s dominance throughout the season, with just one league defeat, propelled them to a commanding 13-point lead over second-placed Girona. Meanwhile, Barcelona dropped to third in the standings, unable to keep pace with their rivals.

The victory not only secured the LaLiga title for Real Madrid but also ensured Girona’s historic qualification for the Champions League next season, marking their debut in Europe’s elite competition.

Girona’s triumph was fueled by a remarkable performance from substitute Portu, who scored a crucial brace to help his team humble their Catalan rivals. Despite an early lead from Barcelona’s Andreas Christiansen, Girona quickly responded with La Liga’s top-scorer Artem Dovbyk finding the equalizer.

Robert Lewandowski’s penalty just before halftime restored Barcelona’s lead, but Girona’s resilience shone through as Portu netted the equalizer in the 65th minute, followed by Miguel Gutierrez’s goal two minutes later to give Girona the lead. Portu sealed the victory with a stunning volley in the 74th minute.

An emotional Portu expressed his joy and gratitude after the match, acknowledging his past struggles with the club and his redemption in front of the fans.

“It’s incredible to look at your shirt and experience this. There is nothing more beautiful than living this,” Portu told DAZN, tears streaming down his face. “I had a thorn in my side with this club… Today I made amends with the fans and I can smile again.”
