Masquerades Suspended in Nsukka Town

Masquerades have been suspended indefinitely in the nine communities comprising Nsukka town, Enugu State, following a recent brutal attack on a female nurse. The nurse, who was on her way to duty, was assaulted by a group of masquerades at the University of Nigeria town of Nsukka, sparking widespread condemnation.

At a meeting convened by the Nsukka Town Federated Union and attended by stakeholders such as the Oha Nsukka, Akpuruaru Nsukka, Igwes, PGs of the nine autonomous communities, and youth representatives, a decision was made to suspend the operations of masquerades until further notice. This decision aims to allow the Council of Elders to conclude their investigation into the assault on the nurse, Miss Blessing Ogbonna, and devise new guidelines for the operation of Oriokpa masquerades.

The resolution emphasized the need for all security agencies to assist in enforcing the suspension, with further updates to be communicated in due course.

In response to this decision, the Otobo Nsukka Cultural Zone Community Developmental Initiative expressed its support and appreciation for the swift action taken by the Nsukka Town Federated Union and the Council of Elders. The group commended their commitment to the safety and well-being of the Nsukka community and urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the Council of Elders as they work on establishing new guidelines for masquerade operations.

The statement issued by the group emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in promoting progress and development within the Nsukka community.
