The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has issued a stern caution to the Federal Government, urging it to refrain from permitting the relocation of United States or French military bases from the Sahel region to Nigeria. In a statement released by the PRP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Muhammed Ishaq, on Monday in Abuja, the party underscored the myriad of potential dangers associated with such a move, emphasizing its potential adverse effects on Nigeria’s security, sovereignty, and overall well-being.

Ishaq highlighted the PRP’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty, security, and welfare, asserting the party’s responsibility to voice concerns and urge caution against any agreements that could endorse such arrangements. The party, founded on principles of liberation from imperialism, emphasized the risks posed to sovereignty, security, economic stability, and diplomatic relations in the region.

Expressing apprehension over the erosion of national sovereignty, Ishaq warned against the potential pressure on the Nigerian government to align with the foreign policy interests of the United States and France, potentially compromising the nation’s independence in decision-making. He cautioned that the presence of foreign military bases on Nigerian soil could lead to unintended consequences, including heightened security threats, community resentment, insurgency, and violence.

Addressing the economic impact, Ishaq urged the government to consider the financial burden associated with hosting foreign military bases, emphasizing the strain on limited resources and the risk of increased dependency on foreign aid. He also warned of potential diplomatic tensions with other African countries and regional instability resulting from the relocation of military bases to Nigeria.

In conclusion, the PRP called upon President Tinubu and the National Assembly to reject any proposals for the relocation of foreign military bases, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing national interest and the safety of Nigerians. The party advocated for a comprehensive approach to addressing Sahel region challenges, focusing on diplomacy, regional cooperation, and sustainable development.
