The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has shed light on the appointment of Finidi George as the new Super Eagles coach, citing his extensive experience and achievements with the team.

Following his stint as the interim coach in two international friendlies in March, Finidi was selected to replace Jose Peseiro, who resigned as head coach of the Super Eagles earlier this year after the AFCON finals.

According to Ademola Olajire, the Director of Communications at the NFF, Finidi’s tenure as an assistant coach to Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro played a pivotal role in his selection.

“Finidi George has not only been a great football player but has also prepared himself very well for coaching, earning laurels in his short coaching career,” Olajire stated in a YouTube video shared by Hotsports.

“He worked closely with the Super Eagles for twenty months as an assistant to Jose Peseiro, witnessing the team’s qualification for the AFCON and their second-place finish in the tournament. This experience gives him a head start over others.”

Olajire also praised Finidi’s decision to return to Nigeria and kick-start his coaching career with Enyimba FC, where he led the team to win the league title in his second season.

“He had the option to stay in Spain and work with a second-tier club, but he chose to come back to Nigeria and coach Enyimba. In his second season, he won the league title, which is no mean feat,” Olajire said.

“Now in his third season with the team, with four matches to go, he’s on his way to retaining the title. This shows that he knows what he’s doing.”

Finidi George faces a challenging task as he prepares to lead the Super Eagles in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures against South Africa, with high expectations from Nigerian football fans.
