Article: The Chief Executive Officer of Mainstream Energy Solution, Lamu Audu, has unveiled plans for a significant expansion of the Kainji Hydropower plant, which will see its capacity soar from 760 megawatts to 980 megawatts.

This expansion is expected to translate into an additional 320,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity supply per hour, providing a much-needed boost to Nigeria’s energy sector.

Audu highlighted that the ongoing repair works, slated for completion by 2027, will pave the way for the full restoration, expansion, and upgrade of the Kainji Hydropower station.

In March, a dedicated team of 23 Chinese divers commenced meticulous repair efforts at the plant, aiming to restore the underwater damaged parts within three months. Audu disclosed that the project entails the construction of two new units and the repair of another generating unit, with contracts successfully secured by Chinese firms.

Acknowledging the persistent challenge of inadequate and unreliable electricity in Nigeria, Audu emphasized the importance of addressing this issue, aligning with their mission to bolster various sectors of the Nigerian economy.

The Project Manager of PowerChina HuaDong Engineering Corporation, Zhao Shejun, detailed the scope of their mandates, which involve intricate underwater repairs, including the installation of steel bars and pouring of concrete. He underscored China’s competitiveness in technology and pricing, highlighting their commitment to providing solutions to challenges faced by African ventures.

Since its inception over 50 years ago, the Kainji Hydropower station, situated in Niger State, has served as Nigeria’s largest hydropower project. Despite the passage of time, the station has encountered deterioration in several parts, prompting the need for extensive repairs and upgrades to ensure its continued efficiency and reliability in meeting the nation’s energy needs.
