In a recent turn of events, former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has consented to present himself for arraignment at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The hearing, set for June 13, will address the corruption charges levied against him.
This development followed the court’s dismissal of Bello’s request to suspend the trial. Abdulwahab Mohammed, Bello’s lead counsel, assured Justice Emeka Nwite of his client’s compliance. Mohammed cited concerns for Bello’s safety in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as the reason for the former governor’s initial reluctance to appear.
Justice Nwite, acknowledging the EFCC’s adherence to legal standards, stated that Bello’s situation was not unique, as other former governors have faced similar proceedings. He emphasized the presumption of innocence until proven guilty and urged Bello to honor the court’s authority.
Responding to the judge’s counsel, Mohammed expressed gratitude and confirmed that, with the EFCC’s assurance of no ill treatment, Bello would attend the court session. The lawyer had sought a four-week period to ensure his client’s appearance, which was unopposed by the EFCC’s counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN.
