The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yobe State has announced its decision to abstain from the upcoming local government elections scheduled for May 25, 2024. The party’s State Organizing Secretary, Mohammed Sulayman, made the announcement during a press briefing in Damaturu.

Sulayman explained that the decision was made after thorough consultations and is based on the party’s stance that local government elections in Yobe have historically lacked transparency and impartiality. “Local Government Council elections have never been free, fair, credible, and impartial under the state commission since inception,” he stated.

The PDP has also leveled accusations against the State Independent Electoral Commission, claiming it has intentionally neglected to inform political parties of the election schedule. Furthermore, Sulayman criticized the exorbitant fees imposed for the purchase of nomination forms, alleging that it is a strategic move to disenfranchise opposition parties.
