On an unannounced visit to the Lokpanta Cattle Market in Umunneochi Local Government Area, Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti assessed progress on the installation of a security perimeter fence intended to transform the market into a non-residential zone. This initiative, first announced last October, is part of a broader strategy to curb criminal activities reported in the vicinity, including a disturbing discovery of decomposed bodies and skeletons near the market.
During his visit, Governor Otti reassured the cattle dealers that his administration’s actions were squarely aimed at criminal elements, ensuring that legitimate business operators need not fear. He emphasized the state’s commitment to relocating residents from the market to enhance security measures further and prevent any criminal misuse of the area.
Governor Otti also addressed sanitation concerns, particularly around the abattoir section of the market, stressing the importance of cleanliness to prevent health risks associated with contaminated meat. He encouraged traders to maintain high hygiene standards to safeguard public health.
The visit concluded with a positive exchange between the governor and Alhaji Danladi, the chairman of the cattle market, who expressed gratitude for the government’s focus on improving conditions for traders.
