At the Justice Anthony Aniagolu Memorial Lecture hosted by Godfrey Okoye University in Enugu, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, emphasized the indispensable role of an independent judiciary in the sustenance of democracy and societal development. Reflecting on his personal experiences, Obi attributed his political successes primarily to the existence of incorruptible judges during his tenure in Anambra State.

Recounting his journey, Obi detailed how the judiciary played a pivotal role in affirming his electoral victories amidst numerous challenges. He explained, “I spent three years in court and it was given to me, and after a few months, I was impeached but the judiciary restored me to power. After one year in office, they conducted another election and elected another person. But I went to the Supreme Court, where judges, with respect for the rule of law, reinstated me to complete my tenure.”

However, Obi expressed concerns over the current state of the judiciary, describing it as “weak and compromised by the executive and highest bidder.” He lamented the erosion of judicial independence, which he believes is vital for combating criminality, fostering economic growth, and ensuring the overall success of democratic governance.

The former governor stressed that while many people critique the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as being the problem of Nigeria, it is actually the judiciary that needs urgent reform. According to him, when citizens denied their rights turn to the courts, they too often face disappointment.
