Chelsea Wins WSL Title with 6-0 Victory Over Man Utd, Hayes Departs

Emma Hayes ended her Chelsea tenure in style as her team secured a fifth consecutive Women’s Super League title with a 6-0 thrashing of Manchester United at Old Trafford, finishing above Manchester City on goal difference.

Starting the final day level on points with City and with a two-goal advantage, Chelsea dominated a lacklustre United, racing to a 4-0 first-half lead. Mayra Ramirez shone, scoring twice and assisting goals for Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and Sjoeke Nusken. Melanie Leupolz added a fifth just after halftime, and Fran Kirby, in her final appearance for Chelsea, sealed the rout.

Despite City’s 2-1 win at Aston Villa, Chelsea’s emphatic victory ensured their top spot. This title marks Hayes’ seventh WSL championship and her 14th major trophy in a remarkable 12-year stint at Chelsea, which almost ended trophyless after losses in the League Cup, FA Cup, and Champions League.

United, who won the FA Cup six days prior, finished fifth in the WSL, a disappointing end after last season’s runner-up finish. Hayes made strategic changes, with Ramirez making an immediate impact, scoring in the second minute and assisting the second goal six minutes later.

Chelsea’s relentless attack continued, with Nusken and Ramirez adding to the tally before halftime. Leupolz and Kirby’s second-half goals cemented the victory, making Hayes’ farewell a memorable one.
