The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of frustrating his petition against former palace officials involved in fraud. In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Osaigbovo Ighobaro, the monarch alleged that the EFCC had aided and abetted crimes by treating his petition with leniency.
The Oba made these remarks during a visit from Mr. Effa Okim, the new Benin Zonal Director of the EFCC, at his palace. He criticized the Commission for not thoroughly investigating and prosecuting the former palace officials, suggesting they were let off lightly despite clear evidence of their wrongdoing.
“We want to draw your attention to one or two grey areas in your operations, no matter how much you try to support them from the Palace,” said the Oba. He recounted how a young lady from the EFCC team mishandled the case, implying that the agency favoured other parties and acted on instructions from the highest bidder.
The monarch expressed dissatisfaction with the EFCC’s previous leadership and their handling of his complaints, despite his attempts to assist the Commission. He criticized the performance of the EFCC team in Edo State, particularly the female officer involved, giving her a “zero” rating for her work.
Despite his criticisms, Oba Ewuare II acknowledged the potential of the new EFCC Chairman, Mr. Olanipekun Olukayode, to achieve greatness if he remained committed to his duties. The Oba also pledged the palace’s support in addressing social inequality and reducing vices in the state.
Mr. Effa Okim, the new Benin Zonal Director of the EFCC, requested the monarch’s support in advocating against financial crimes, noting that Edo State ranks second in Nigeria for economic crimes, behind Lagos State. He emphasized the historical ties between Cross River, his state of origin, and Edo State, and sought the Oba’s prayers and blessings to fulfil his responsibilities effectively.
