He arrives from Feyenoord, where he led the team to the Dutch title in the 2022-23 season and also won the Dutch Cup. Slot is known for his attacking style of play and his ability to develop players. He previously had a successful spell at AZ Alkmaar and is highly regarded for his tactical approach and his track record of over-performance.
As for Liverpool’s plans under Slot, the focus will be on maintaining the high-energy, possession-based attacking football that the club has been known for under Klopp, while also addressing the defensive vulnerabilities that have been evident in recent seasons. Slot’s tactical approach typically involves a 4-2-3-1 formation, with a focus on a double pivot in midfield to progress centrally through the first line of pressure. The challenge will be to make Liverpool more structured and solid defensively, while also getting the best out of the attacking talents at the club, including Darwin Núñez, to ensure a consistent goal-scoring threat.
It’s also expected that Slot will look to strengthen the squad in the transfer market, particularly in the centre-back position following the departure of Joel Matip. Whether another centre-back is needed may depend on the development of Ibrahima Konaté, who will be a key player under Slot. The new head coach is set to begin his first pre-season in charge of the squad in July, with preparations for the 2024-25 season already underway.
