Lagos, Nigeria – Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated his commitment to transforming Lagos State into a global investment hub by reforming its justice sector. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Justice Reform Summit on Monday, themed “Enhancing The Administration of Justice For Economic Growth, Investment Protection and Security in Lagos State,” the governor underscored the necessity of a robust judicial system to attract and protect investments.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for Lagos to develop a stronger justice framework to establish itself as an international financial centre and a preferred destination for global investors. “We are planning to make Lagos an international financial centre. We want to make Lagos the choice destination for investment and a safe haven for investment worldwide. But for us to do that, we need a strong judicial system for that to exist because that will be one of the strongest points that investors will be looking for. That will be one of the strongest protections that will be required and will be needed,” he stated.

Drawing a comparison with Singapore, which has successfully reformed its justice system to attract global investments, Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the progress Lagos has made in justice sector reforms but stressed the need for further improvements. “We cannot sit back and expect that because we are the best in our country, that equates us to being one of the best in the world. Singapore has less than 6 million population today, and we are 24 million. They don’t have two heads. They don’t have the kind of minds and strength that we have in this state and in this country. So the question is, what is wrong with us? There is no nation that wants to end its brief anywhere, and doesn’t have a rule of law as one of the beacons of deciding how it engages,” he added.

The governor also hinted at the impending appointment of additional judges to handle the increasing number of cases in the state’s courts, ensuring timely justice delivery.

In his welcome address, Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, highlighted the importance of safeguarding the rule of law and promoting access to justice as crucial elements in transforming the justice sector. He mentioned that the state is working on reforming several laws to stimulate economic growth and development.

The Justice Reform Summit serves as a platform for stakeholders to discuss and implement strategies to enhance the administration of justice in Lagos, ultimately positioning the state as a secure and attractive destination for international investment.
