Abakaliki, Ebonyi State – Governor Francis Nwifuru has reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the status of Abakaliki, the state capital, by initiating a significant infrastructural project. At the groundbreaking ceremony for the 4.61km Tunnel and Flyover bridge at Vincent Agwu Nwankwo Junction, also known as VANCO, Governor Nwifuru emphasized that the project aims to beautify the capital and alleviate traffic congestion in the area.
Governor Nwifuru voiced concerns over the distortion of Abakaliki’s master plan by developers, pledging his administration’s dedication to implementing the original plan to restore the city’s intended layout and functionality. “The project, upon completion, will decongest the location known for gridlock, which has particularly cast the state in a negative lens due to dumps and roadside trading,” he stated.
Highlighting the historical significance of the site, named after Vincent Agwu Nwankwo, an influential politician and lawmaker, Nwifuru’s administration seeks to honor Nwankwo’s legacy by revitalizing the city in accordance with the original master plan conceived in the early 1950s.
Senator David Umahi, the Minister of Works and immediate past Governor of Ebonyi State, commended Governor Nwifuru’s developmental strides at the ceremony. Umahi praised Nwifuru for fulfilling his electoral promises of ensuring continuity and consolidation in the state’s development.
The event saw a large turnout of residents and top government officials, reflecting broad public support and interest in the project’s commencement.
Governor Nwifuru’s efforts are seen as a critical step towards transforming Abakaliki into a modern, well-planned city, enhancing both its aesthetics and functionality for the benefit of its residents.
