Egypt and China Sign Agreements to Deepen Cooperation

Beijing, China – Egypt and China signed agreements on Wednesday to deepen their cooperation during President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s visit to Beijing. The ceremony, which coincided with the 10th anniversary of the Egypt-China comprehensive strategic partnership, was witnessed by el-Sissi, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The agreements include collaboration on China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to bring Chinese companies to build Chinese-funded transportation, energy, and infrastructure projects overseas. China has invested billions of dollars in Egyptian state projects, such as the Suez Canal Economic Zone and the new Administrative Capital east of Cairo.

The Egyptian delegation also discussed bilateral relations and efforts to bring stability to the Middle East amid the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, according to a statement released by the Egyptian presidency. However, the statement did not provide further details.

Investments between Egypt and China amounted to around $14 billion in 2023, compared to $16.6 billion in 2022, according to the latest data released by Egypt’s statistics agency.
