Santiago, Chile – Chile has officially joined a coalition of countries supporting a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. President Gabriel Boric voiced his outrage over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, emphasizing the severe impact on women and children.

President Boric condemned the Israeli army’s use of “indiscriminate and disproportional” force and called for international accountability. “These acts demand a firm and permanent response of the international community,” he stated, reflecting Chile’s alignment with other nations seeking justice for alleged war crimes in the region.

Chile’s significant Palestinian community, numbering around 500,000, underscores the country’s decision. Many are descendants of Christian Arab immigrants who have become influential in business and politics. Symbols of their cultural heritage, such as the Palestino football team, which sports the colors of the Palestinian flag, are prevalent.

Chile’s support for the genocide case aligns it with other developing countries, including Mexico, Brazil, and Indonesia, backing South Africa’s petition. This move underscores the global focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the international calls for accountability regarding alleged war crimes.

President Boric, a leftist former student leader, has taken a balanced stance on the conflict, condemning both the Hamas attack that killed over 1,200 people and the extensive Israeli military offensive in Gaza, which, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, has resulted in over 36,000 Palestinian deaths. His criticism highlights the need for accountability and restraint on both sides of the conflict.
