Kenya Air Force celebrates 60 years of securing country’s airspace

The Kenya Air Force (KAF) is this week celebrating its 60th anniversary to commemorate six decades of dedicated service since its establishment.

KAF was founded on June 1, 1964, with the mission to defend and maintain the sovereignty of Kenya’s airspace, a mission it has firmly upheld.

Its formation coincided with Kenya’s first Madaraka Day anniversary.

For 60 years, KAF has continued to play a crucial role in safeguarding Kenya’s airspace and territorial integrity, supported by a network of bases and forward operating bases across the country.

Its responsibilities also extend beyond logistics to include vital humanitarian efforts and fostering regional cooperation.

Central to its success are its well-trained personnel, whose diverse skill sets reflect the significant investment in their development.

This commitment to training and excellence has been key to maintaining the high operational standards of the Air Force.

The KAF@60 celebrations to be held at the Moi Airbase on June 7 will highlight the enduring legacy and its pivotal role in national security and regional stability.

The milestone will also offer an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the past six decades and to honour the men and women who have contributed to KAF’s storied history.

KAF is one of the three services that includes the Kenya Army and Kenya Navy of the Kenya Defence Forces.

KAF recently witnessed a historic moment following the appointment of Major General Fatuma Ahmed as the first female service commander.

Fatuma succeeded Lt Gen John Omenda who was promoted as the vice chief of Defence forces.
