Following the revocation of Heritage Bank’s operating license by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), reality star Mercy Eke has expressed distress, revealing that she holds over N100 million in her account with the now-defunct bank.
Eke, winner of the fourth edition of the Big Brother Naija reality show, disclosed that she opened the account with Heritage Bank because the bank sponsored the show. She attributed her decision to her account manager, whom she accused of persuading her to fix her funds with the bank despite being aware of its issues.
Taking to her X handle on Thursday, Eke lamented the situation, writing: “I really don’t know how to react about this … I have been hoping for the best .. thinking there’s a way out… [Hashtag] HeritageBank.”
Responding to concerns from fans, Eke admitted to holding above N100 million in her account with Heritage Bank and expressed regret over her decision to open an account with them. She blamed the sponsorship tie between the bank and the reality show for her initial choice.
Regarding her account manager’s role, Eke revealed feeling misled into fixing her funds with the bank despite its troubles, expressing disappointment and self-blame.
In efforts to recover her funds, Eke disclosed submitting a notice to the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Commission (NDIC), which recently initiated the liquidation process for Heritage Bank. However, she expressed concerns as the refund process is set to begin with depositors holding N5 million and below.
Eke’s situation underscores the challenges faced by individuals with substantial funds in revoked banks, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in the banking sector.
