Gunmen alleged to be kidnappers have shot and killed top politician Ejike Ukwueze in Enugu State. The tragic incident occurred on Friday night in the local area of Neke Odenigbo, within the Enugu East Local Government Area.

In a viral video, Ukwueze’s car is seen riddled with bullet holes, indicating multiple shots were fired. Ukwueze, who was driving at the time, succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

Ejike Ukwueze was the immediate younger brother of the late Chijioke Ukwueze, a former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly representing Isi-Uzo Constituency. Chijioke Ukwueze passed away suddenly in 2020 during a plenary session of the House.

A family source alleged that they suspect the killing was politically motivated. They believe it was an assassination, as Ejike was gaining influence in the Isi-Uzo Local Government Area’s political scene.

“Yeah, I heard he was a strong contender. Aside from having the intention of running for the LG election, he was becoming a force in the Isi-Uzo political affairs, standing in for his dear late brother who was one of the most accepted and powerful political stakeholders in Isi-Uzo,” the source revealed.

As of now, the police authorities in Enugu State have not issued a statement regarding the incident. The investigation into the motive and the identity of the assailants is ongoing.
