The Edo State Government has denounced the recent attack on soldiers in Okomu community and pledged to take decisive action against criminal cult groups and youth leaders known as ‘Okaigheles’. The State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, made this statement during a visit to wounded soldiers and a police officer at the Military Base Hospital in Benin.
According to Nehikhare, the attack on military personnel by suspected cultists is unacceptable, and Governor Godwin Obaseki is deeply concerned about the incident. In response, the government has set up a task force led by the Director of the State Security Service (DSS) to combat cult activities in the state.
Nehikhare emphasized that cultism and the activities of youth leaders pose a significant threat to security in Edo State. The ban on these groups, imposed by the governor, aims to neutralize their activities and restore peace. He urged leaders in Edo South to support the government’s efforts and rein in their children involved in criminal activities.
The commissioner expressed regret over the attack on soldiers, highlighting the critical condition of one soldier and the injuries sustained by two others. He stressed the government’s commitment to preventing further violence and ensuring the safety of all residents.
Nehikhare commended the Army for its responsible conduct and called on all Edo people, regardless of political affiliations, to support the government in combating cultism and violence. He emphasized the need for unity in the fight against criminal elements and underscored the government’s determination to uphold law and order in the state.
