A simmering dispute between Benin and Niger has intensified this week following a series of contentious incidents at the port of Seme, escalating tensions between the neighbouring West African nations. The latest episode in the ongoing feud underscores the deepening rift between the two countries, which have been embroiled in a war of words since May.

The catalyst for the latest flare-up occurred when Benin authorities arrested five Nigerien nationals on allegations of illegally entering the port of Seme. In response, Niger accused Benin of kidnapping personnel from its oil company who were reportedly present at the port to oversee the loading of an oil shipment.

Benin has countered these claims by asserting that two of the detainees are operatives of Niger’s army junta, alleging that they gained access to the facility using fraudulent documents. The port of Seme has emerged as a focal point in the ongoing dispute, symbolizing the broader tensions between the neighbouring states.

Central to the conflict is Niger’s reliance on the port of Seme for the export of its crude oil. Despite being landlocked, Niger operates a pipeline from its oilfields to the port, where tankers are loaded with its valuable commodity for international trade. However, tensions erupted in May when Benin imposed a blockade on oil shipments, accusing Niger of failing to reopen its border for trade. The blockade was eventually lifted following diplomatic intervention from China.

Complicating matters further, Niger has sealed its borders since a military coup last July, citing security concerns. In contrast, Benin has reopened its side of the border and has called on Niger to reciprocate. However, Niger has accused Benin of harbouring French troops on its territory, alleging that they pose a threat to its stability.

As the diplomatic standoff between the two nations shows no signs of abating, the situation at the port of Seme remains tense, with both sides digging in their heels and trading accusations of hostility. The escalation of tensions underscores the fragile nature of relations between Benin and Niger, raising concerns about the potential for further destabilization in the region.
