Labour Party Expresses Concern Over Alleged Gag Order on Presidential Candidate Peter Obi

The Board of Trustees of the Labour Party has voiced its apprehension regarding an alleged gag order imposed on its candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi.

In a statement released on Monday in Lokoja and shared with the media by Emmanuel Idakwo, the Kogi State Publicity Secretary of the party, concerns were raised over the reported imposition of a gag order on Obi, preventing him from making statements regarding the 2023 presidential election.

Titled “Disagreement and Rebuttal of Incorrect Criticisms of Some Groups in Middle Belt Against Peter Obi,” the statement highlighted the party’s deep concern over the directive that restricts Obi from commenting on an election marked by irregularities, particularly in result transmission to the IREV.

Idakwo emphasized the importance of Obi’s voice in addressing the irregularities and ensuring the integrity of future elections. He underscored the need for transparency and accountability in the electoral process, noting the disenchantment felt by the electorate due to reported irregularities.

The statement called for a reevaluation of the alleged gag order, emphasizing the importance of candidates speaking out on electoral issues to uphold transparency and fairness. Idakwo referenced the European Union Report on the presidential election as a comprehensive critique, highlighting the need to address the shortcomings revealed during the election proceedings.

Despite the Supreme Court’s affirmation of the Election Tribunal’s decision, the statement pointed out the lingering doubts over the electoral process’s integrity, stressing the importance of addressing technical glitches and ensuring transparency.

In conclusion, Idakwo raised questions about the independence and impartiality of the judicial system, calling for measures to uphold the credibility of electoral processes and restore public trust.

The statement reflects the Labour Party’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and fairness in Nigeria’s electoral system, urging stakeholders to address the concerns raised and work towards ensuring free and fair elections.
