The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced its intention to hire an expatriate technical adviser for the Super Eagles following the team’s disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. This decision was detailed in a communiqué released to the media on Thursday, June 13.

According to the communiqué, the Executive Committee of the NFF held a meeting on Wednesday, June 12, to address key issues concerning Nigerian football.

“The Executive Committee of Nigeria Football Federation held a meeting on Wednesday, 12th June 2024 in hybrid mode to deliberate on important issues in Nigeria Football and resolved as follows:

“The Executive Committee wholeheartedly apologized to Nigerians for the dismal output and subsequent very poor returns of the Senior Men National Team, Super Eagles, in four out of 10 matches in the ongoing qualification series for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals, and pledged to work assiduously and put necessary measures in place to ensure a better-prepared squad ahead of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers in September this year and the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025,” the NFF said.

In light of this, the Executive Committee has decided to hire an expatriate technical adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, in preparation for the AFCON qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

The NFF also expressed dissatisfaction with the poor attitude of some players towards national assignments and has decided to implement a more robust scouting program to identify outstanding Nigeria-eligible players worldwide who can significantly enhance the national team.

Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, has faced criticism following the team’s 2-1 loss to Benin Republic on Monday in the fourth match-day of the CAF 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Before this, the team had drawn 1-1 against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the third round of qualifiers.

These results place Nigeria fifth in the six-team table, with six more games remaining in the qualification series.
