Three persons have died following the collapse of a mining pit in Adunu community, Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State. This tragic event occurred barely two weeks after a similar incident in Galadima Kogo, Shiroro Local Government Area, where 14 people remain trapped.

The state Chairman of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Yusuf Shuaibu, confirmed the latest incident, stating that the pit caved in around 10 am on Thursday, June 13, 2024. Shuaibu added that the association has mobilized a team for an on-the-spot assessment of the scene with support from the Niger State government.

The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Baba’arah, confirmed the death of three persons and the rescue of one person in the community. According to Baba’arah, all those trapped were recovered from the pit following community efforts.

The mining site is reportedly an illegal one that attracts mostly women and children from the community.
