Dramatic scenes unfolded on Latam flight 4049 when a 10-year-old boy was removed from the plane for refusing to wear his seatbelt. The flight, scheduled to travel from Santa Marta to Bogota, Colombia, was thrown into disarray as the child ignored the crew’s instructions, forcing the captain to abandon take-off and return to the gate.

Witnesses reported that the boy was adamant about not wanting to stay seated or fasten his seatbelt, resulting in over an hour’s delay for the 8:20 am departure from Simon Bolivar International Airport. A video circulating on X (formerly Twitter) captures frustrated passengers demanding the child’s removal and urging the crew to take action.
Passengers called for the boy’s father to take him off the aircraft, leading to further commotion. The video also showed another child becoming increasingly agitated by the delay, while airline staff tried to manage the situation and resume the flight. El Colombiano reported that this child was the same one who had refused to comply with the seatbelt rule.

In an announcement to keep travelers informed, a flight attendant stated, “Dear passengers, we inform you that if the flight regulations are not complied with, we cannot start the flight. They were not complied with, we had to return. And now we are waiting for the passengers who did not comply with the regulations to please disembark. We cannot start the flight this way due to safety.”
As reported by MailOnline, an airport staff member eventually boarded the aircraft and spoke to the father, who then carried his son out, allowing the flight to proceed after more than an hour’s delay.
While many passengers supported the airline’s decision, one woman was overheard defending the boy, saying, “He has rights, it’s a child.”
This incident follows other recent flight disruptions. In May, a Frontier Airlines flight was forced to deplane after a passenger wouldn’t follow exit row instructions. Additionally, a Spirit Airlines flight from Las Vegas was delayed when a woman tried to bite another passenger and hurled racial slurs at police officers, necessitating a complete deplaning.
