FIFA President Gianni Infantino surprised football fans in Paris on Saturday with a special ceremony renaming Boutroux Stadium to Stade Pelé, in homage to the Brazilian football legend, Pelé. The stadium, located in a working-class neighborhood of Paris, now bears the name of the iconic player who revolutionized football.
Infantino expressed his deep admiration for Pelé, emphasizing his role in uniting the global football community. “Football unites, and Pelé united the world before everyone else. He was the first international star and the first international football icon,” Infantino remarked. He further explained that his initiative to rename stadiums worldwide after Pelé aims to ensure that future generations remember the legendary player’s contributions to the sport.
“Pelé was not just a pioneer in trying amazing feats with the ball; he was the first to successfully execute them. His influence on football is immeasurable, inspiring generations of players worldwide,” Infantino added.
The renaming ceremony in Paris, attended by officials and football enthusiasts, coincided with celebrations for the promotion of the stadium’s home club, Paris 13 Atletico, to the French third division for the upcoming season. Despite the stadium’s new entrance and murals honoring Pelé, it still awaits approval to host the team’s national league matches next season.
Officials highlighted that the budget has been approved, and the inauguration marked a significant milestone. The stadium’s association with Pelé’s name signifies a commitment to maintaining excellence in its facilities and operations.
Stade Pelé in Paris joins a list of venues globally, including stadiums in Colombia, the Maldives, and Rwanda, honoring Pelé’s legacy and contributions to football. The renaming ceremony reflects Pelé’s enduring impact on the sport and underscores FIFA’s efforts to commemorate his unparalleled achievements worldwide.
