Professor Aisha Maikudi was announced as the acting vice chancellor of the University of Abuja on Thursday following a decision by the university’s senate. She succeeds Professor Abdulrasheed Na’allah, the institution’s sixth vice chancellor, whose tenure ends on June 30.

The senate approved Professor Maikudi’s appointment pending the selection of a substantive vice chancellor by the university governing council. Before taking on this new responsibility, Maikudi, a professor of international law, served as the deputy vice chancellor academics at the university.

Early Life and Education

Aisha Maikudi, a native of Katsina State, was born in the Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State on January 31, 1983. Growing up in a family of academicians influenced her career choice, with her father being an avid reader and her mother a teacher. She began prep school at the age of one and completed primary school by age 10. She then attended Queens College, Yaba, Lagos, where she sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in 1999.

At 16, Maikudi proceeded to Cambridge for her A levels before graduating with an LLB degree from the University of Reading, United Kingdom. She attended Law School in Abuja, followed by an LLM from the London School of Economics, and later obtained her PhD from the University of Abuja.

Academic Career

In 2008, Professor Maikudi began her academic career at the University of Abuja, following her one-year compulsory National Youth Service Scheme with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Headquarters in Abuja in 2007. She has since specialised in international, company, and United Nations laws.

Achievements and Records

Professor Maikudi made history by becoming the first and youngest female head of the Faculty of Law in 2014. She advanced to the position of Deputy Dean in 2018, maintaining her record as the first and youngest in the university. She rose to the rank of professor in 2021, becoming the youngest professor at UniAbuja and the first female professor of International Law in the institution and the North-West region.

In 2023, during its 96th regular meeting, the governing council of the University of Abuja approved her appointment as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, a position she uniquely holds as a female academic.
