Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer has acknowledged his position behind prominent players like Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden in the England squad, explaining his patience for more opportunities on the international stage.
Palmer, who didn’t feature in England’s first two Euro 2024 fixtures against Serbia and Denmark, made a notable appearance during the last 30 minutes of the 0-0 draw with Slovenia. His performance has sparked calls for manager Gareth Southgate to consider starting him in Sunday’s last-16 match against Slovakia.
“Personally, I think I’m ready but it’s not up to me. I just wait for my time and when I get on I just try to do what I do,” Palmer stated. “I was just excited to get on for 20 minutes and thought I was going to try to do something or make an impact.”
Despite his eagerness, Palmer understands the competition he faces within the squad. “I wouldn’t say I’m impatient because I know it’s my first tournament and you’ve got players like Saka, Foden, and Bellingham in my position so it is understandable. But I just want to get on and try to impress when I do,” he added.
As England progresses in the tournament, Palmer’s enthusiasm and readiness to contribute could provide Southgate with valuable options moving forward.
