Floods Hit Ibeju-Lekki Area of Lagos State Following Heavy Rainfall

Flooding inundated residential areas and major roads in the Ibeju-Lekki region of Lagos State on Wednesday morning, following several days of continuous heavy rainfall.

According to NAN, the rain persisted for hours, leading to significant flooding across various strategic locations in Ibeju-Lekki and neighbouring areas. The worst-hit zones included Epe, Eredo, Bogije, Labora, Abijon, Sangotedo, Awoyaya, and Ibeju-Lekki itself.

Residents have pointed to the blockage of waterways due to waste dumping as a key factor exacerbating the flooding situation. Mr. Rasheed Ayobami, a resident of Labora, expressed frustration over the flooding’s impact on his home. “There is too much water flowing into my compound, the entire house is submerged,” Ayobami said. He highlighted that the absence of a functional drainage system in his newly developed area was to blame for the water damage and destruction of his belongings.

Similarly, Seyi Arowosaye criticized the perennial flooding along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway, attributing it to neglected drain maintenance. “The blockage of drains is a major issue here,” Arowosaye said. He urged both the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and Lagos State Government to take immediate action to clear the drains and accelerate road repairs in the affected areas, including the ongoing works in Sangotedo.

Mrs. Bola Fadugba, also from Labora, shared her struggle during the rainy season. “I live in Labora but during the rainy season, I relocate with my family to my younger sister’s house in the Eputu area,” she said, lamenting the lack of adequate drainage and the resulting flooding of her home.
