Nigerian Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has shared a humorous anecdote from his first encounter with Jamaican reggae star Damian Marley, describing how Marley “stole” his weed at a festival in France years ago.
In a recent interview with Naija FM, Lagos, Kuti reminisced about their initial meeting at a South France festival early in his career. At the time, Marley had just released his acclaimed album Welcome to Jamrock.
“I met Damian Marley at a festival in South France. It was at the beginning of my career. He also had just released his sophomore breakthrough album, Welcome To Jamrock,” Kuti recounted.
The two artists performed at the same show, and Kuti recalled offering Marley some of his weed to smoke. “He said we should share it. After rolling it, I gave it to him because he insisted he would light it. But after lighting it, he chanced me. I asked him to pass it back, but he said he doesn’t want to share anymore,” Kuti laughed.
Kuti also discussed their recent collaboration on the track “Dey.” He revealed that their managers share a close relationship, which facilitated their musical partnership. “I sent Damian Marley all the songs from my upcoming album, and he chose to jump on ‘Dey’ which became the lead single,” Kuti said.
The upcoming album, according to Kuti, will feature several prominent musical figures.
