Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Senate is set to strengthen inter-parliamentary relations with other democratically developed countries and enhance its oversight functions. This initiative was highlighted during a meeting of the Senate Committee on Inter-parliamentary Affairs.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, disclosed that she, along with Senator Jimoh Ibrahim representing Ondo South District and other lawmakers, will embark on a study visit to parliaments in other countries. This visit aims to observe legislative activities, deepen inter-parliamentary relations, and record best practices to be implemented upon their return.
“We will also conduct oversight functions in State Assemblies to ensure effective governance and accountability,” said Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan. She emphasized the importance of studying parliaments with higher numbers of female representatives to understand their experiences and challenges.
In his remarks, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, Chairman of the Committee, stated that they would also visit State Assemblies to interact with local legislators and observe how they manage governance at the lower level.
“This initiative is part of the Senate’s objectives to build inter-parliamentary relationships within Nigeria and internationally and to enhance its oversight function,” he said.
The study visits and oversight functions are expected to provide valuable insights and improve legislative practices in Nigeria.
