Thousands of Yemeni demonstrators took to the streets of the capital city, Sanaa, on Friday, expressing their solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip amid the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Organized by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who have maintained control over much of the country’s territory, the rally was part of a series of weekly demonstrations held since the latest escalation of the decades-old conflict began in October 2023. The protests serve as a platform for Yemenis to voice their unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.
“What our army, missiles, and naval forces have already achieved was not enough for the beloved Yemeni people and they are asking for more. Today, the Yemeni people say loudly that they can never abandon Palestine,” said Radwan, a participant in the demonstration. “They are saying that the Palestinian people are not alone and that Yemeni people in all areas and provinces stand with Palestine with all their power.”
The ongoing conflict extends beyond the Gaza Strip, with active fronts in the West Bank, on the border with Lebanon, and a new front on the Red Sea opened by Yemen’s Houthis.
In a related development, fresh negotiations for a phased cease-fire deal in Gaza are underway in Doha. Hezbollah’s deputy leader has indicated that the group is prepared to halt hostilities with Israel if a successful agreement is reached.
Recent Developments:
- Sanaa Protests: Thousands in Yemen rally in support of Palestinians, demonstrating widespread public solidarity.
- Conflict Expansion: War fronts include Gaza, West Bank, Lebanon border, and Red Sea.
- Diplomatic Efforts: Negotiations for a cease-fire deal are ongoing in Doha, with potential for a significant de-escalation if terms are agreed upon.
The situation remains fluid as international diplomatic efforts continue to address the complexities of the conflict and seek a resolution.
