MIAMI, FLORIDA — Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez has hit back at former Manchester United player Andreas Pereira following Uruguay’s victory over Brazil in the Copa America 2024 quarter-final. Pereira had previously asserted that Brazil had a team “that Uruguay dream of having.”
After Uruguay’s triumph, Suarez addressed Pereira’s comments with sharp retorts. “We have the best midfielders in the world, top-level players,” Suarez told reporters. “To talk about Uruguay, you have to have a little more respect, know the history of Uruguay.”
Suarez further added, “Before I say which players want to be on the Brazilian national team, I have to say that the person who made that comment was [Giorgian] De Arrascaeta’s reserve [at Flamengo], who is the best player in Brazilian football. So imagine what it’s like for us to hear that.”
Uruguay secured their spot in the semi-finals after a tense penalty shootout, with Manuel Ugarte scoring the decisive kick. Brazil’s Eder Militao’s attempt was saved, and Douglas Luiz hit the post, sealing their fate.
Uruguay is set to face Colombia in the Copa America semi-final on Wednesday.
