In a significant policy move, Nigeria’s Federal Government announced on Monday the suspension of duties, tariffs, and taxes on the importation of key food items through both land and sea borders.
The suspension applies to maize, husked brown rice, wheat, and cowpeas, as part of a 150-day duty-free import window aimed at alleviating food security challenges in the country.
Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, unveiled the initiative at a press conference in Abuja. He stated, “We are implementing a 150-Day Duty-Free Import Window for certain food commodities including maize, husked brown rice, wheat, and cowpeas. This move will support the private sector and our own efforts to import 250,000MT each of wheat and maize, which will be directed towards small-scale processors and millers across Nigeria.”
Kyari also emphasised that while the suspension of duties will help address immediate food supply needs, all imported food items will be monitored to ensure they meet safety standards. Under the new policy, these commodities will be subject to a Recommended Retail Price (RRP) to regulate market prices and prevent inflation.
This policy shift reflects the Government’s commitment to improving food security and stabilising the domestic food market.
