Isa Kwarra, Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), announced on Monday that the Commission is fully prepared to conduct the National Population and Housing Census but is awaiting approval from President Bola Tinubu to finalise the date for the long-anticipated exercise.
Speaking at a media conference in Abuja to mark World Population Day 2024, Kwarra outlined the Commission’s readiness and detailed the plans for the census. This year’s World Population Day, observed on July 11, carries the theme: “Embracing the Power of Inclusive Data Towards a Resilient and Equitable Future for All.”
Kwarra confirmed that the United Nations recommends a decennial census, and the NPC is poised to meet this requirement. “We are prepared to conduct the census as soon as the President gives us the green light,” Kwarra stated. “Our resources are in place to recruit additional personnel and ensure that we conduct a thorough and reliable census that delivers inclusive and verifiable data.”
He expressed optimism that if the date is set soon, the NPC can complete the census by April 2025, aligning with the 2020 round of census schedules. However, Kwarra mentioned that the Commission had initially planned for the census to be held in November, and this remains their preferred timeline.
“The timing of the census is crucial for its success. We hope to proceed in November, as was originally planned,” he added.
Kwarra’s remarks come as part of the lead-up to World Population Day 2024, which aims to highlight the significance of inclusive data for sustainable development and equitable growth for all populations.
