Abia Comets Explain Decision to Sack 21 Players Ahead of New Season

Abia Comets have explained the rationale behind their decision to release 21 players, a move they announced on Monday.

The Nigeria National League (NNL) team’s chairman, Boniface Uche, stated that the decision was made to re-engineer the squad for improved performance in the upcoming season.

Uche clarified that the players let go were primarily those whose contracts had expired or who were on loan with the club. He assured fans and the media that all players and staff have been compensated as per their agreements.

“I want to be quoted anywhere, Abia Comets is not owing any player nor staff. Everyone has been paid as at when due,” Uche said. “We didn’t sack any of our staff, unless those whose contracts elapsed with the season. As we prepare for the new season, those of them that their services will be needed, will be recalled.”

Uche also emphasized that the team will focus on recruiting more quality players for the new season.
