Former South African Parliament Speaker Faces Corruption and Money Laundering Charges

The former speaker of South Africa’s parliament, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, appeared in court on Tuesday to face charges of corruption and money laundering. During her hearing at the Magistrate’s Court, it was announced that her case would be transferred to the High Court in Pretoria for trial.

This development indicates that the prosecution believes it has a strong case against Mapisa-Nqakula. The trial is set to commence on October 16.

Mapisa-Nqakula stands accused of soliciting R4.5 million from a defence contractor during her tenure as South Africa’s defence minister. She resigned as national assembly speaker following her indictment in early April. Mapisa-Nqakula denies the charges against her.
