DJ Switch Celebrates Win in ECOWAS Court Battle Over #EndSARS Protests
In a historic judgment, the Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has ordered the Nigerian government to pay Obianuju Udeh, popularly known as DJ Switch, and two other victims N2 million each for violating their rights during the #EndSARS protests in 2020.
DJ Switch, who has been at the forefront of the #EndSARS movement, has described the verdict as a win, saying she and the other victims trusted that the facts and evidence presented to the court would be irrefutable, even in the face of discouragement.
In a post on her social media handle, DJ Switch expressed gratitude to her lawyers for presenting their experiences and evidence with tact, and to the esteemed judges for doing their due diligence. She also thanked the ECOWAS court for delivering justice, saying it was one of the best days of her life since the horrific events of October 20, 2020.
DJ Switch and the other victims have been able to work through the emotional trauma they experienced and the life changes they had to make, thanks to professional help. She is now looking forward to moving on to other passions and sharing them with her followers.
The ECOWAS court’s judgment comes as a significant victory for DJ Switch and the #EndSARS movement, which was met with violence and brutality by the Nigerian security forces. The protests were sparked by widespread police brutality and human rights abuses, and led to a nationwide movement calling for police reforms.
The verdict is a testament to the power of grassroots activism and the importance of holding those in power accountable for their actions. It is a reminder that justice can be served, even in the face of adversity and discouragement.
As DJ Switch so aptly put it, "Naysayers can scream all they want! It is now legally documented in history who the criminals actually were."
