Delta State Police Command Deploys Massive Personnel for Hitch-Free Local Government Election
The Delta State Police Command has taken a proactive approach to ensure a peaceful and successful local government election in the state. According to a statement by the Command’s spokesman, SP Bright Edafe, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Olufemi Abaniwonda, has ordered a massive deployment of personnel to all polling units, RACs, collation centers, and offices of the Delta Independent Electoral Commission.
The deployment is aimed at protecting officials and ensuring a hitch-free election. The Commissioner has also restricted vehicular movement between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm on Saturday, the day of the election, except for those on special duties and students writing the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB).
The Marine Police have been deployed to the waterways to maintain peace during the election. Only officials on essential duties, including accredited election monitors and observers, and students writing NABTEB will be allowed movement. The ban on VIP escorts during the election will also be enforced, and any officer found wanting will be arrested and sanctioned accordingly.
The Commissioner has advised vigilante groups, anti-cult volunteers, and hunters to stay away from polling units, warning that anyone caught meddling with the election process will be decisively dealt with. He has also urged residents to be law-abiding, emphasizing that the outcome of the election will largely depend on how the electorate conduct themselves.
The Delta State Police Command has assured that it will not compromise its primary responsibility of guaranteeing the protection of life and property before, during, and after the elections. With this massive deployment of personnel, the Command is confident that the election will be conducted peacefully and successfully.
