South African Restaurant Creates Giant 3-Meter-Long Sandwich

In a mouth-watering display of culinary excess, Annies Ladies Bar in Cape Town, South Africa, has cooked up a gargantuan sandwich measuring 3 meters (9.8 feet) long and weighing a staggering 65.27 kilograms (145 pounds). The record-breaking sandwich, a gigantic take on the popular South African dish, the Gatsby, took over four hours to prepare and was devoured by approximately 140 people.

The sandwich features 10 layers of fillings, including 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) of tomatoes, 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of meat, three layers of french fries, a layer of calamari, and a generous helping of onion rings. The sauces used range from garlic to cheese, pepper, mushroom, and tartare.

Joe Redelinghuys, the brain behind the massive sandwich, runs the restaurant and bar with his wife and owner, Annie. He explained that the biggest challenge was finding a bread roll large enough to hold all the ingredients, which required the use of three 1-meter (3 feet) -long rolls specially baked and joined together.

The Gatsby, a popular South African takeaway meal, typically consists of "slap chips" (sloppy french fries) and meat in a chunky bread roll, serving multiple people. According to Redelinghuys, the sandwich’s name was inspired by the 1970s film "The Great Gatsby."

Annies Ladies Bar had recently added Gatsbys to their menu, and Redelinghuys’ supersized project was the natural next step. He has been in contact with South African record officials and the sandwich is currently being recognized as the country’s largest Gatsby sandwich.

Although it does not hold the world record for the largest sandwich, the record is held by a grill in Roseville, Michigan, for a staggering 2,467-kilogram (5,440-pound) sandwich in 2005, according to the Guinness World Records organization.

The sandwich is now a distant memory, having been devoured by regulars at Annies who were invited to share in the massive snack.
