I am reporting live from Media Talk Africa, and I have been digging deep into the latest political developments from the north. It appears that some powerful northern politicians are secretly scheming to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
According to sources close to the matter, these northern heavyweights have been holding clandestine meetings to discuss their plans to wrest power back from Tinubu. The alleged ploy is said to be gaining momentum, and it’s not hard to understand why.
Tinubu has had a rocky start to his presidency, facing widespread criticism for his perceived neglect of the north and his alleged favoritism towards his home region, the Southwest. Some northern politicians are said to be unhappy with the current state of affairs, citing a lack of representation in top government positions and a perceived marginalization of the north.
One prominent northern socio-cultural and political group, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has already fired a salvo, with its spokesman saying that the north regretted supporting Tinubu in the 2023 general election. The NEF has also alleged that the current administration has neglected the north, citing issues like the lack of development projects, poverty, and insecurity.
Other northerners, including former governor Nasir El-Rufai, are also reportedly involved in the plot to oust Tinubu. El-Rufai, who has been a vocal critic of the President, has been meeting with key stakeholders, including the candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso.
While some might view this development as a shake-up in the political landscape, it remains to be seen whether these northern leaders will be able to muster sufficient support to unseat Tinubu in 2027. After all, Tinubu has a strong base of support in the Southwest, and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), is still the dominant force in Nigerian politics.
It’s also worth noting that Afenifere, a prominent Yoruba socio-cultural organization, has cautioned against the ongoing politicking, urging politicians to focus on resolving the country’s pressing issues instead of fueling regional tensions.
The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has also called for caution, emphasizing that regional considerations should not take precedence over the overall interest of the country.
As it stands, the battle for the presidency in 2027 is heating up. But only time will tell whether Tinubu’s foes will be able to muster enough momentum to unseat him. We will continue to monitor this developing story and keep our readers informed.
