Euro 2024: Souness Urges Southgate to Drop Kane for Watkins in Final
Graeme Souness, a former Liverpool midfielder, has sparked controversy ahead of the Euro 2024 final by urging England manager Gareth Southgate to drop captain Harry Kane from the starting lineup against Spain on Sunday.
Kane has scored three goals in six games and is one of six joint top scorers at the tournament so far. However, Souness believes the Bayern Munich star has not been at his best, with two of his goals coming from penalties. In his place, Souness suggests starting Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.
"Gareth Southgate faces the biggest football decision of his life on Sunday: whether to drop Harry Kane," Souness told the Daily Mail. "If he gets it right, it is a decision that will make Gareth a national hero and, on current evidence, I’d say you have to leave Harry out."
Souness, who has been a long-time supporter of Kane, acknowledged the striker’s impressive goalscoring record at Tottenham, Bayern Munich, and for England. However, he feels that Kane has struggled in the tournament, saying that he has looked "like he is towing a caravan around the football pitch."
The decision to drop Kane would be a significant one, especially given his importance to the team. Southgate will have to weigh up the pros and cons before making his final decision. Will he stick with his trusted captain, or will he take a risk and give Watkins a chance to shine?
