Bauchi Emirate Council Appoints Governor’s Brother as Council Member
In a move that has garnered attention in the North African region, the Bauchi Emirate Council has appointed Alhaji Adamu Muhammad Duguri, the elder brother of Governor Bala Mohammed, as a member of the council representing district heads. The appointment, effective July 11, 2024, fills a vacant position in the council.
According to a letter signed by Council Secretary Alh Shehu Mudi Muhammad, the Local Government Service Commission had conveyed its approval to the Emirate Council for the appointment of Adamu Muhammad Duguri as the District Head Representative in the council. The letter was made available to journalists on Sunday.
The document, titled "Re-Request for Appointment of Alh. Adamu Muhammad Duguri as Council Member representing the District Heads," stated that Adamu Muhammad Duguri’s appointment was to fill the vacant seat of representative of District Heads in the council.
The letter, which concluded with a message of congratulations to the newly appointed member, read: "I am directed to refer to your letter No. BEC/ADM/LGC/2/VOL.D 8th May, 2024 on the above subject matter and convey the Commission’s approval for the appointment of Alh. Adamu Muhammad Duguri (District Head of Duguri) as Council member of the Emirate to fill the vacant seat of representative of District Heads in the Council.
While congratulating the District Head for a well-deserved appointment, accept the Commission’s esteemed regards, please."
The appointment has sparked significant interest in the region, with many speculating about the potential impact on the governance of Bauchi state. As the older brother of Governor Bala Mohammed, Adamu Muhammad Duguri’s appointment raises questions about the independence of the council and the potential conflicts of interest. Only time will tell what consequences this move will have on the politics of the region.
