House of the Dragon’s Aegon II Targaryen: “I Want to Prove Myself”

Aegon’s Descent into Darkness: An Exclusive Interview with Tom Glynn-Carney

In the latest episode of HBO’s "House of the Dragon," King Aegon II Targaryen’s reckless decision to fly Sunfyre into battle at Rook’s Rest has left him bedridden and suffering. In an exclusive interview, actor Tom Glynn-Carney opens up about his character’s thought process, his relationship with Aemond, and what’s next for Aegon’s tumultuous reign.

When asked about his initial reaction to reading the script, Glynn-Carney revealed, "I knew it was coming. When it was coming, I wasn’t aware. But my immediate reaction was about how it came together by our amazing writers with this sort of amazing, theatrical, rousing, terrifying, unpredictable craftsmanship that I was very happy to be on the receiving end of."

As Aegon’s character navigates the aftermath of the battle, Glynn-Carney delved into his thought process, saying, "He’d been a bit backed into a corner by all the things that have accumulated over time with being king where his worst fears and insecurities were coming into plain sight and becoming true. He felt weak, and he was seen as weak, and kind of useless — with what Alicent had said to him (‘Do nothing’) in his chamber, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back."

Regarding Aemond’s betrayal, Glynn-Carney expressed uncertainty, stating, "I think the moment of recognition was the fact that the fireball was coming at it. I don’t think he had time to think that he’s done this on purpose. If those thoughts are to come off, they will probably come later. As a viewer, I’m still unsure. I want people to make their own minds."

When asked about Aegon’s potential for redemption, Glynn-Carney emphasized the importance of giving his character the space to prove himself, saying, "I want it to be, in an ideal world, for there to be an opportunity to prove himself and make decisions that he has made — not somebody else who thinks they know better. To carve out his own path as king. And then just see if he fucks it up as much as people think he might."

The interview also touched on Aegon’s emotional state, with Glynn-Carney describing him as "a boy in a man’s body" who craves attention and validation. He noted that Aegon’s lack of emotional intelligence has left him struggling to cope with the consequences of his actions.

As Aegon’s story continues to unfold, Glynn-Carney’s nuanced performance has captivated audiences worldwide. With his character’s fate hanging in the balance, fans are eagerly anticipating what’s next for the troubled king.
