Pixar’s "Inside Out 2" Tops South Korean Box Office for Fifth Consecutive Weekend
In a remarkable feat, Pixar’s "Inside Out 2" has maintained its top spot at the South Korean box office for a fifth successive weekend, successfully fending off a new challenger in the form of disaster-action film "Project Silence."
According to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic), "Inside Out 2" scored $3.53 million between Friday and Sunday, accounting for a 30% market share. This increment lifted the film’s running total to $53.3 million since its release on June 12, making it the third-highest grossing film in Korea this year and the highest for any imported title.
Directed and co-written by Kim Tae-gon, "Project Silence" takes a road bridge near Incheon Airport as the setting for a chain reaction of accidents, explosions, and mayhem, featuring genetically engineered dogs trained to target people according to their voice. The film earned $2.49 million over the weekend, attracting 356,000 spectators and accounting for a 21% share of the weekend market.
Other notable films at the Korean box office include "Escape," which slipped to third place with $2.43 million over the latest weekend and a cumulative total of $9.19 million over 12 days; "Handsome Guys," a Korean remake of "Tucker & Dale vs Evil," which earned $1.48 million in fourth place and has now achieved profitability; and "Hijack 1971," which expanded its total to $11.3 million since debuting on June 21.
The weekend’s second-placed new release was Japanese animation film "Doraemon: Nobita’s Earth Symphony," which earned $218,000 over the weekend and $270,000 over its five-day opening run. Other new releases included "Fly Me to the Moon," a U.S. comedy starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, which opened in seventh place with $145,000; and "Uma Musume: Pretty Derby – Beginning of a New Era," a Japanese animation and games derivative, which took $79,500 between Friday and Sunday.
Aggregate, nationwide weekend box office slipped by 20% to $11.7 million.
