Universal’s Despicable Me 4 Tops the U.K. and Ireland Box Office Chart
Universal’s latest installment in the Despicable Me franchise has dominated the U.K. and Ireland box office, earning a whopping £8.8 million ($11.4 million) in its opening weekend. According to Comscore numbers, the animated sequel pushed Disney’s "Inside Out 2" to second place, with the latter adding £2.2 million to its running total of £44.4 million.
"Despicable Me 4" marked a strong debut, securing the third spot with a £1.3 million opening, while Sony Pictures’ "Fly Me To The Moon" debuted at No. 4, collecting £862,358. Paramount’s "A Quiet Place: Day One" held steady in its third week, rounding out the top five with £824,948 and bringing its cumulative total to £8 million.
Newcomer "Longlegs" from Black Bear secured the sixth position, followed by DJ Tech Ltd’s Tamil-language "Indian 2" with a total of £213,245 and a Telugu-dubbed version, "Bharateeyudu 2," with £39,127. Sony Pictures’ "Bad Boys: Ride Or Die" maintained its presence in the chart after six weeks, sitting comfortably in seventh place with a total of £11.5 million.
Universal’s "The Bikeriders" and "MaXXXine" occupied the eighth and ninth spots, respectively, with totals of £3.5 million and £787,377, followed by Altitude Film Distribution’s "In a Violent Nature," which debuted at No. 10 with £101,730.
In the coming weeks, audiences can look forward to Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated disaster film "Twisters" arriving in over 300 locations on Wednesday, July 17, and National Theatre’s "Present Laughter – NT Live 2019" on Thursday, July 18, featuring Andrew Scott and Noël Coward’s provocative comedy.
On Friday, July 19, the box office will see a diverse range of releases, including Noora Niasari’s Sundance-winning film "Shayda," starring Zar Amir Ebrahimi and Osamah Sami, as well as music documentary "Blur: To the End," Paramount’s 30th-anniversary re-issue of "Forrest Gump," and action-comedy "Thelma."
