Big Sean Appears to Take Shots at Kanye West in New Freestyle

Rapper Big Sean seemingly sent a couple of shots at his former G.O.O.D. Music labelmate Kanye West in his latest freestyle, which dropped on Tuesday (July 16). The Detroit emcee, known for his witty bars and sharp lyrics, spit subliminals at someone who got matching tattoos with another man for "clout." While many initially thought he was targeting Kendrick Lamar, DJ Akademiks, and others jumped to conclusions, Sean soon cleared the air.

The freestyle, which was uploaded to the audio platform On the Radar, had fans buzzing with speculation about who the target of Big Sean’s rhymes was. The song’s context, however, points to a beef with Kanye West, which isn’t new. In a 2021 episode of Drink Champs, Kanye famously dissed Big Sean, saying signing him to G.O.O.D. Music was the "worst thing he ever did."

Sean rapped, "I had to switch the home team ’cause they committed treason," before adding, "N****s looking for engagement like they got their knee bent/ I got better things to do than to find someone to beef with." He also referenced the 2002 tattoo incident where Kanye, Steve Lacy, and Lil Uzi Vert got matching tats that state, "We here forever technically."

Big Sean’s comments were met with backlash from fans who thought he was aiming for Kendrick Lamar, leading him to send out a series of tweets clarifying the situation. "N fk these bih a niaz, every one of them," he typed. "Yall goin wit so many narratives, im talking to da haters who just keep finding something to point out they dont like bout me. Its not even worth explaining tho im a just focus on the music."

Sean later responded to DJ Akademiks, who initially claimed Big Sean was taking shots at Kendrick Lamar. "Ak you know I f**k wit you," Sean typed. "But I’m laughing cause you know that tweet n the video don’t got nothing to do with each other lol."

DJ Hed, a West Coast DJ with ties to Kendrick Lamar, further confirmed Big Sean’s claims, stating that the rapper had a conversation with him to clear up any confusion. "I talked to Sean. The bar was ‘I got better things to do than find someone to beef with,’ And it was not for Dot. Bar was directed at a different Gemini," he typed.
